How You Can Help
- ASK the person directly if he or she is having suicidal thoughts, has a plan to commit suicide, and if they have lethal means available.
- Listen! It really helps to have someone to talk to.
- Don't be judgmental.
- If, in your judgment, the person may harm themselves do not leave them alone.
- Try to get the person to seek professional help from a therapist, mental health center, or doctor.
- If the person needs to talk they can call their friends/family, local crisis clinics, or find a counselor.
- If the person feels like they may harm themselves have them get in contact with Designated Mental Health Professionals (contact your local crisis clinic) or go to the Emergency Room.
- If the person will not seek help - YOU should take the initiative. Talk to family members, counselors, clergypersons, Crisis Clinics, County Designated Mental Health Professionals, etc...
- If the person is attempting to commit suicide, or has already taken action (such as overdosing on pills) contact 9-1-1 immediately.
- Know your community resources.
